Best Baby Activities: Tummy Time

The experts agree - floor time with your infant is an extremely important baby activity. While one school of thought advocates more time on baby’s back (least restrictive), most pediatricians emphasize tummy time.

Tummy time is a core prerequisite for baby milestones such as rolling and crawling because it builds neck strength and control.  This is why it is one of the best baby activities. Put a blanket, towel or sheet on the floor then put your baby on his tummy with his head to one side. It helps to get on the floor next to your baby and encourage him to lift his head as well as turn it.  Nearby toys or calling his name helps as well.  Start with a minute or two one each side then progress to longer periods of time as your baby’s muscles get stronger.  Be absolutely sure to watch your baby during this activity!

Tummy time is a baby activity that is usually recommended fairly early by pediatricians - many babies are even able to lift and turn their heads around the 1 month old mark.  Like most milestones, when your baby is able to do this differs from infant to infant.

Also allow your baby to spend time on her back - she can move much more freely, especially her arms and legs. Moving his head is easier when he is on his back. Finally, this is a much more comfortable and mentally engaging position for baby as well - many babies seem to be very content watching the world from below.

None of this is earth shattering information for parents, but it is easy to forget about this baby activity.  After all, parents are busy people too.  Get down on the floor with your infant and make it a baby game - have fun!
