Buying Nursery Bedding with Confidence: Important Facts to Keep in Mind

The perfect nursery usually starts with the perfect crib bedding. So you’ve chosen the whole nursery decor, right down to the stuffed animals that will sit on the dresser… but aren’t you forgetting something? When choosing baby bedding there are a lot of things to consider, so make your choice carefully, and keep these things in mind:

- You baby needs to be comfortable, so choose something soft. Cotton is a natural choice, but look for 100% cotton instead of blends. Knit cotton or flannel are both great choices, but higher-thread-count woven cotton is an option, too.

- Keep in mind that you’re not going to have a lot of time with a new baby in the house, so you will want bedding that’s as easy to care for as possible - in other words, make sure it’s machine washable.

- Suffocation is a serious concern for young babies, so the first thing to do is make sure the crib sheet fits properly. A small investment can solve the problem, though: elastic straps to hold the sheets in place.

- While you will definitely need bedding for your crib, you do not necessarily need a set. The American Academy of pediatrics recommends against unnecessary bedding that is included in most bedding sets (like crib bumpers or quilts). Purchasing separates can be smarter and cheaper than buying a bedding set. Buying separates has the added advantage of giving you a lot more freedom in choosing bedding - you can mix and match to get a truly unique look.

- When all else has been addressed, spend some time picking bedding that will fit the rest of the room, including your furniture.

Buying bedding within your budget can be a concern, but take into account that you may use it longer than you think. If you get good-quality bedding, you can use it on both the crib and your toddler bed, allowing you to use it for several years. Think about family size, too. If you planning on multiple children, then think about neutral crib bedding like the Vintage 4 piece crib set, because you can reuse it (and the whole nursery decor) no matter what the gender of your next child. On the other hand, if you are sure there will be no more babies, or if you like to redecorate frequently, cheaper bedding is probably more cost-efficient. In any case, keep extra sets of sheets on hand, in case of emergency!
