Caution Before All Else: Locating the Perfect Infant Crib Bedding
Monday, October 20th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedAnyone who has been baby shopping recently, especially if they’ve browsed online, will tell you that the vast selection of baby bedding online can actually make a decision harder instead of easier. Looking for animal designs? You can find anything and everything - from caterpillar crib bedding to gorillas. If it’s angels you’re looking for, be prepared to spend some time on your search - there are hundreds of different choices. For extremely popular themes (think Winnie the Pooh or Noah’s Ark), the number of choices can start to get ridiculous.
Whether it’s boy nursery bedding or baby girl, when you see all the super-cute options you have, you may be tempted to overspend or break your budget. But it’s important to realize that your baby won’t know the difference between a $100 bedding set and a $5000 set. Buy something cute, but don’t hurt your finances in the process. Here are some things that your baby actually will care about:
- Think twice before installing bumper pads - they may not be as useful as you think. The idea behind a crib bumper is to protect baby from the hard bars of the crib, but if the bumper comes loose it may cause suffocation. When installing bumper pads, be sure to follow all safety guidelines. Keep ties on the outside of the bed, and secure them tightly. Even better, take the pads out of the crib for the first year.
- The term “crib sheet” refers only to the fitted sheet, because flat sheets are unnecessary (and potentially dangerous) for newborns. Not all crib sheets fit all mattresses, and the wrong sized sheet can pop off the mattress and cause safety risks. Diaper leaks are inevitable so consider a mattress protector and avoid white sheets!
- As far as blankets go, babies don’t need to be any warmer than adults, and loose blankets can also cause problems. Stick with a sleep sack instead. Stuffed animals and pillows are dangerous so take them out of the crib.
When choosing crib bedding, make sure it’s safe first, then worry about looks.
